{Do} Judge a Book By Its Cover {no. 7} // Avenger by Heather Burch

I believe this may be a vampire story.

Yuck.

Sorry. I suppose I shouldn't have disclosed my opinion so loudly. I'm trying to work on being less critical. But I just have bad experience with vampire stories. I mean, not bad experience exactly because I've never read one--but isn't Twilight a bad experience whether you've read it or not? Insert emoticon with tongue sticking out.

I see . . .

A girl with brunette hair with a reddish tint. She's in a black jacket. Behind her head is a set of white wings. She's apparently in a dark forest nearly bereft of leaves. It seems a little foggy in there. The tagline is Sometimes facing your destiny means risking everything.

I think . . .

The girl is the main character. That she's wearing black may mean that she's involved with the vampires (if this is the vampire story; I can't quite remember even though I read the back). The set of wings . . . ? I don't think vampires have wings. But these wings are white, so they seem like they would symbolize something good. The dark forest makes me think the book as a whole is rather creepy, especially considering the purpleish, foggyish backdrop. The tagline and the title show that this is one of those on-the-edge-of-your-seat books--or supposed to be. We'll see how well Heather Burch manages the suspense.

Have you ever heard of Heather Burch, or read anything by her? I'd love to hear your thoughts on her if you have. I'm not looking forward to having to wade through the rest of my Zonderkidz stack before I get to embark on the journey of Merlin, but I guess I'll just have to suck up and live with it.

    1. Yay! Don't read this one.

Haha ... I'm only in Chapter 7 and it's really a ... not-worthwhile book. It's not exactly about vampires, but it's about unearthly things. It's pretty well-thought-out, I think, but it's just really ... weird. And I'm not "connecting" with it. It's just sort of ... there. SIGH. Just recently I made a list of the books I would be likely to put in my Top Ten First-Time Reads of 2013 post that I'm planning to do at the end of the year/beginning of next year, and I've only got four: Interrupted (Rachel Coker), Chasing Jupiter (Rachel Coker), Edenbrooke (Julianne Donaldson), and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (Mark Twain).

What about you? Have you been able to find some good books to read this year? Another of my friends is also having my problem.

    2. Eh, those kind of books are hard to get through! Do you always try to finish books you don't like? I do, and have only not managed it with one. A G. A. Henty. *snooze*
Rachel Coker sounds like a good authors - I hope to read something by her soon. I haven't read any of those! : ) Well, this year I haven't read much, but I did enjoy a few Janette Oke books, if you like light romances, and Red Rain by Aubrey Hansen. Digging into last year a bit, Prophet by Frank Peretti was AMAZING. :)

    3. I usually try to finish books I don't like because it makes me feel ... beaten, somehow, not to finish them. I guess I'm weird.... But I can justify stopping if they have something nasty in them. So far this one doesn't really, so I just am reading it.

Interesting, I've never read anything by G.A. Henty, but he's on my list. (I think I could say that of almost any author anyone following my blog recommended...maybe not.)

Great! Hopefully I'll be able to read Red Rain soon...after I finish Barron's Merlin books and your book :)

    4. I know what you mean - if you can get through it, do it! :)

      G. A. Henty is very popular, which is a surprise to me... I've read 3 of his books, only one that was SLIGHTLY interesting, and the other two put me to sleep. (Even the interesting one had a lot of moments I wanted to quit) I don't know... maybe it's just what you like to read. He's extremely detailed.

Don't be in a hurry to read my book - you'll probably be disappointed. ;) :P

    5. I will NOT be disappointed. You should, as people always tell me, be more confident in your skills :)

  2. I've heard of Heather Burch and plan to read her books but didn't think they were about vampires. Ah, well. I'll give them a try despite my agreement with you; Don't like vampire stuff. :p

    1. Good news, then! This one is not exactly about vampires, but sounds kind of like it. The "Halflings" are half-human, half-angel; the girl on the cover is a Halfling who hasn't gotten her wings yet. In this book, a Seeker is out to hunt her. Seekers were supposedly created when Cain had an "angry spirit" that prompted him to kill Abel. Ever since then their best way of finding people has been through spilled blood on the ground (Abel's blood cried out to God, and similarly the hunted's blood calls out to the hunter). So it is a little weird. And they shred people up. Ick.

  3. Yes, I most definitely agree about vampire novels!!!!! Ew! Though admittedly, around Halloween I sometimes get a strange urge to read them... like this year I'm probably going to borrow the Cirque Du Freak books from my Grandma... appealing or not. I'm sure you're going to love Merlin:) Also, just wanted to tell you that you can now follow moi blog via e-mail:)

    1. Yay! I'm so glad most other peeps don't like them. Booklist said of this book, "Sure to appeal to fans of both star-crossed lovers and Stephenie Meyer." I think that's what made me think it was a vampire book.

Thanks for the info about your blog! I'll go check it out.
